What to Expect
When you arrive, you'll be greeted by your therapist and invited into a treatment room. Your initial consultation will start with up to 15 minutes of discussion around your history, your goals in coming to massage and the specific body areas you would like to work on. For this reason we suggest your first appointment be at least 60 minutes.
Unlike the pure relaxation style of massage enjoyed at day spas, the massage options available at Functional Bodyworks are intended to be an active part of your well being, sport or rehabilitation programme. Your therapist will assess your physical strengths and weaknesses, the current demands on your body and your areas of pain and discomfort.
The emphasis will be on working from where you are today, whether that includes fitting around an existing exercise plan or looking at some options to gently introduce appropriate movement into your lifestyle.
The Functional Bodyworks therapists place a strong emphasis on treating every patient as a whole person. When planning a session with you, we take external factors into account – from poor sleep to an upcoming important meeting – in order to tailor treatment to the demands of your life.
We will always check that the pressure of the techniques used are within your comfort levels. We will also use a range of techniques that are best suited to your specific area of discomfort or dysfunction to ensure the best possible outcome.
All therapists here at Functional Bodyworks are experienced in working around athletic performance schedules and will work with you to adjust treatment plans accordingly.
The massage itself will take place in a professional and warm room, with fresh linen, towels and appropriate drapery for each client. Your privacy is fully respected and massage can be carried out through clothing or towels if preferred. All of our therapists work within client pain and pressure tolerance and will request feedback on your comfort levels.
Once your initial massage session has been completed, you will be offered a glass of water and a hot towel. At this stage you may wish to discuss further treatments. While our therapists do take a long view with massage therapy, there will be no pressure placed on you to re-book. A good therapist accepts that clients often wish to go away and assess for themselves the effect of a treatment, before making a decision around further treatment.
This will also be the time when your therapist recommends, or refers you to a different specialty eg. physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic care, strengthening and conditioning, if he or she feels this would be the best option for you.
